Necessary conditions are given for a commutative Banach algebra to be decomposable as a semi-direct product of some algebra together with a specified principal ideal. It is also shown that a commutative radical Banach algebra cannot be so decomposed if the generating element of the principal ideal has a partial approximate identity.
