The paper relates to a fundamental problem in theoretical spatial economics having a mathematical representation to which topologies specifications are not irrelevant. Aspects are the existence or not (in one specification or another: with a continuum of agents or not) of an equilibrium, the locational dependency of utilities, the introduction of transportation costs, the welfare implications. The authors postulate the fundamental qualitative difference of alternative specifications in theoretical spatial economics.
