The author distinguishes between two approaches to the problem of protomathematics: archaeological and anthropological. The latter forms his subject. He presents a number of examples of how contemporary illiterate tribes treat counting, elementary operations with natural numbers, geometric shapes and constructions, symmetry, gnomonics, strategic games, and logical relationships. The text is supported by 52 references mostly drawn from anthropological sources.
