The authors consider the problem how to derive development patterns for elliptic- and hyperbolic-curvature regions. This is essentially formulated in terms of Gaussian curvature. Therefore as an instructive example the problem of developing patches on a spherical surface or a torus is studied. The background for the investigations is the use of graphics workstations to design garments as 3D mathematical models. This application is explained in more detail.
