The authors consider segmented parametric cubic curves which accept given values at the joints. An approach is presented here which automatically adjusts certain parameters to satisfy simultaneously both minimization and shape related criteria. Specifically, ``tangent lengths'' are determined to produce an interpolation curve that mimics the intrinsic shape of the original data.
