At first a description of the original Sniffer algorithm introduced by \textit{R. A. Donnelly} and \textit{J. W. Rogers} [Int. J. Quantum Chem. 22, 507 (1988)] is presented. Furthermore the authors describe an extension of the Sniffer algorithm for global optimization and compare this algorithm to simulated annealing using the seven test functions proposed by L. C. W. Dixon and G. P. Szego.
