The authors simplify their earlier model in J. Theor. Biol. 147, 553-571 (1990), concerning the distribution of brood, honey and pollen in honey bee colonies. This is a reaction-diffusion system with four variables in one-dimensional space. The authors analyze the mechanics of pattern formation in this model.
