The authors intend to generalize the results of the first author [ibid. 66, No.\ 9, 274--277 (1990; Zbl 0723.11052)] and to continue his work [ibid. 66, No.\ 5, 109--111 (1990; Zbl 0714.11068)]. They provide lower bounds for the class number of a real quadratic field in terms of the divisor function by using interrelationships between reduced ideals and continued fractions, and give some applications to real quadratic fields of extended Richaud-Degert type.
