Plane free oscillations of a liquid in channels of constant cross-section are considered. The spectral problem whose eigenfunctions are the stream functions is investigated for the first time in this setting. The eigenvalues of the spectral parameter occurring in the boundary condition on the free surface are determined by a variational method. The properties of the stream functions are identified, and these properties can be used to reconstruct the flow pattern.
