The author calculates the eigenvalues of an \(n\)th order matrix with diagonal entries \(a\) and off-diagonal entries \(b\) to get the well-known result \(\lambda_{1,2, \dots, n - 1} = a - b\), \(\lambda_ n = a + (n - 1)b\).
