Making use of a technique introduced by \textit{L. R. Bragg} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 17, 220--230 (1986; Zbl 0606.33005)] the authors obtain here an alternative expression for a generating series studied by \textit{L. Carlitz} [Acta Math. Acad. Sci. Hung. 14, 21--29 (1963; Zbl 0118.06502)].
