A right congruence \(\rho\) on a semigroup \(S\) is said to be essential if for every congruence \(\sigma\) on \(S\) we have \(\rho\cap \sigma=\iota \Rightarrow \sigma = \iota\). In this paper there is obtained a characterization of semigroups with the descending chain condition on right ideals that have no proper essential right ideals and no proper essential right congruences.
