Smooth static solutions of the Einstein-Yang-Mills equation with SU(2) gauge group are considered. The equations are reduced to a system of two ordinary nonlinear differential equations with singularity. The methods developed in an unpublished authors' paper allow to simplify the proof of the result in [\textit{R. Bartnik} and \textit{J. McKinnon}, Particle-like solutions of the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations, Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 141- 144 (1988)].
