The following result is proved: A space is hereditarily separable if and only if every family \(\mathcal F\) of real-valued functions defined on it has a countable subfamily \({\mathcal F}'\) such that \(\mathcal F\) and \({\mathcal F}'\) have the same lower-semicontinuous functions below them.
