[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] The book contains 47 selected papers presented at the International Conference on Knowledge Based Computer Systems KBCS'87, Bombay, India. The papers are grouped in the following sections: AI applications (3 pages), Computer architectures and parallel processing (2), Expert systems (5), Intelligent tutoring systems (3), Knowledge representation (6), Logic programming (6), Natural language understanding (5), Pattern recognition (2), Reasoning (5), Search (2), Speech (1). A special section (7 papers) is devoted to describe the activities at the KBCS centres, the KBCS project supported by the Indian Government and assisted by the United Nations Development Programme. Bringing together very important names and researches from United States, Europe, Canada, Japan and, of course, India, this remarkable collection of papers provide proofs for at least two points: (1) the increasing popularity of the KBCS approach to the commercial and industrial AI applications, and (2) the need for constantly growing effort of researches and experiments in fundamental AI fields (such as Reasoning, Logic programming, Knowledge representation, Natural language, Computer architectures, etc.) as the real engine to support the AI development.
