[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] The volume contains 30 contributions delivered at the UNESCO Symposium ``AI in higher education'' held in Prague in October 1989. CEPES UNESCO invited to this event leading specialists (\textit{R. M. Aiken} (USA), \textit{J. Cuena} (Spain), \textit{R. Kowalski} (Great Britain), \textit{R. Pfeifer} (Switzerland), \textit{L. Siklossy (The Netherlands), \textit{R. Suppes} (USA) and \textit{R. Winkels} (The Netherlands}) who held the invited lectures opening the sections on 3 main topics: --- the teaching of AI in higher education, --- the uses of AI in higher education, --- research and development in AI in higher education. The papers summarize experiences either in teaching AI concepts on various levels (ranging from advanced engineering courses to humanistic informatics) or in different AI application projects for intelligent tutoring systems or computer based instruction systems. Special attention is given to the impact of new technologies on the education process considering possible changes of the structure of the body of knowledge provided for at different levels. The book offers a very good and readable review of the mentioned topics.
