The authors exhibit a class of planar acyclic digraphs such that any planar drawing in which the vertices are grid points and the arcs are straight lines oriented upwards requires exponential area. If bends are allowed in the arcs, they present a linear-time algorithm for producing such drawings with a small number of bends, asymptotically optimal area, and certain symmetric properties.
