Let \(S\) be a smooth projective surface endowed with a pencil of nonhyperelliptic curves of genus 3. As a first result, the lower bound of \(K^ 2_ S\) is proved in a different way from Horikawa's and Chen's. Secondly, a method to build concrete examples of such surfaces is given. Finally, a degenerating family of non-hyperelliptic fibrations of genus 3 is constructed.
