Generalizing results of \textit{H. Wielandt} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 6, 106- 110 (1955; Zbl 0064.247)] and \textit{K. Fan} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 42, 431- 437 (1973; Zbl 0256.47026)], the author establishes max-inf and min-sup characterizations of finite sums of eigenvalues of certain operators on Hilbert spaces that are symmetrizable (on the left) relative to a given positive operator.
