In order to assess the possibility of applications of magnetic fields on physiological systems, a simple model for knee joints subjected to the magnetic field is presented. The model consists of two parallel porous cartilageous surfaces separated by a thin film of non-Newtonian lubricant representing the synovial fluid, which is assumed to behave like a paramagnetic fluid system. The upper surface normally approaches the lower one which is maintained at rest. A transverse magnetic field is applied to the system. The approximate solutions of the governing equations obtained by a perturbation method describe three regions: two porous matrices and the thin fluid film.
