The authors prove the aperiodicity of a number of tiles which are described in the book `Tilings and Patterns' (1987; Zbl 0601.05001) of \textit{B. Grünbaum} and \textit{G. C. Shephard} and called there Amman sets 2, 3, 4, and 5. The so called ``composition technique'' is used to establish the aperiodic character of these tiles. The final section is devoted to general remarks and observations.
