Starting from the three general displacement differential equations of conical shells (Mushtari-Donnell theory), this paper leads by introducing a displacement function to an eight-order differential equation. As special cases, the basic equations of cylindrical shells (Vlasov solution) and of circular plates are derived. The general solution of the governing equation with variable coefficients is obtained by using generalized hypergeometric functions. For axisymmetric bending, the general solution is expressed by Bessel functions. Numerical results are given for a shell under symmetrical loads on elastic foundation of Winkler type. Edge effects are remarkable.
