It is shown that the classical successive approximation approach for solving the von Kármán equations presented by W. Z. Chien may be interpreted as the method of strained parameters in the singular perturbation theory. Solutions of the small deflection problem and the orthogonality conditions enable to find some relevant approximations in the nonlinear case.
