The author gives a new proof of a result of \textit{G. Mess} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 115, No. 3, 849-852 (1992; Zbl 0758.57003)], concerning the non-existence of a universal framed hyperelliptic curve. He uses only standard elementary techniques of algebraic geometry and the proof is valid in any characteristic \(p\neq 2\).
