The paper of a mathematical nature considers the possible inversion of classical linear viscoelastic constitutive equations in conjunction with different topological spaces on which this problem can be defined. This inversion in general is not unique, depending strongly on the relevant topology. The question whether the model can be incorporated in a natural energy function is also examined. Fourier transforms provide the main tools of the analysis.
