Steady two-dimensional flow of a viscous incompressible fluid at low Reynolds number past a circular cylinder is studied for two cases: the flow at large distances is considered as simple or variable shear. The discretization is performed by backward-differences and the resulting algebraic equations are solved by the `Block SLOR' method. The stream and vorticity lines, the drag, lift and torque on the cylinder are calculated.
