The paper deals with numerical finite difference schemes for the solution of the radiative transfer equations with steep features (such as ionization fronts). An operator-split explicit-implicit scheme is described in which the advection term in the transfer equation is solved explicitly while the spatially stiff material-radiation terms are treated implicitly. Also an implicit method is presented using the accurate estimate of the time averaged fluxes. These methods are shown to provide a small enough numerical diffusion of steep features.
