Recently, the expected throughput of the Ethernet (1-persistent) protocol has been obtained by \textit{D. K. Choi} and \textit{B. G. Kim} [The expected (not worst-case) throughput of the Ethernet protocol, IEEE Trans. Comput. 40(3), 245-252 (1991)]. In this paper, we present a mean value analysis of the throughput based on the idea of evaluating the effect of the node locations like the space-time model. But we exclude the concept of space-time region introduced by Choi and Kim [loc. cit.]. We estimate the influence of node locations on collision probabilities and durations of collision recovery and use them in the analysis. As compared to the analysis of Choi and Kim, our approach requires less computation, but generates comparable results. Furthermore, computation can be reduced by making use of the mean values of key parameters in the formulation for the approximation of the throughput.
