In this elementary paper the author describes the Tutte group of a projective plane as a factorgroup of the multiplicative loop of the corresponding ternary field. (For definitions see the paper). As a corollary he obtains that the Tutte group of a free finitely generated free plane is a direct product of a cyclic group of order two with a free abelian group of countably infinite rank.
