The paper presents algorithms for computing the Hilbert function and dimension of a polynomial ideal. The algorithms are based on an intermediate evaluation of the Hilbert series. The algorithms are given in full detail together with a complexity estimate and some (generic) examples executed with the computer algebra system Macaulay.
