For certain diffusion problems (the motivation here comes from semiconductor processing) the `active region' is localized so behavior can be adequately resolved with a comparatively large time step in most of the domain but needs a smaller time step in a small part. The paper describes implementation of such a scheme for a one-dimensional problem with a boundary layer and exhibits a significant speedup with this as compared to a `standard' scheme.
