The author extends some results on the rank additivity which are related to matrix polynomial equations. For an arbitrary polynomial \(p(x)\) two characterizations of a square matrix \(A\) satisfying the polynomial equation \(p(A)=0\) are obtained. Some results on rank additivity closely related to the matrix-theoretic version of \textit{W. G. Cochran's} statistical theorem [Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 30, 178-191 (1934; Zbl 0009.12004)] are given.
