The author proposes optimal moving grids on which the solutions of the linear heat conduction and the viscous Burgers' equation in one space dimension are approximated. The numerical calculation of optimal moving grids for piecewise linear finite element approximations of solutions of partial differential equations in the least-squares norm is considered. The optimal approximation relies on an exact knowledge of the solutions of the partial differential equations.
