The authors prove the existence of Banach spaces which cannot be renormed in a uniformly convex manner (M. M. Day, 1941) even as such a space has the property \((\beta)\) (S. Rolewicz) lying intermediate between uniform convexity (UC) and nearly uniform convexity (NUC).
