Let \(X\) be a complex analytic (or algebraic) variety and \(Y\) a pure codimension one subvariety of \(X\); set \(U:=X\backslash Y\). This is a well-organized survey on the good properties (e.g. to be Stein or affine or \(q\)-convex or cohomologically \(q\)-complete) of \(U\). As stressed by the author, this survey contains only pre-1980 results, except the last 3 pages.
