A semi-infinite crack grows due to stress wave diffraction in a weakly- coupled thermoelastic solid. A rudimentary inelastic zone at the crack edge acts both as a heat flux site and as a crack-blunting mechanism. The transient analysis is first-step in the sense that constant crack/zone extension speeds are considered, and the material properties do not themselves vary with temperature.
