The authors have considered a relatively new, efficient, and robust general iterative procedure for solving large sparse systems of linear algebraic equations arising from an old meteorological problem. The objective is to demonstrate that the preconditioned generalized minimal residual method can be useful as a general-purpose solver for linear (elliptic) partial differential equations.
