This note considers the Lie algebra structure of the master symmetries for the KP equation. In particular, it is proved that a result of \textit{K. M. Case} and \textit{A. Monge} [J. Math. Phys. 30, No. 6, 1250-1253 (1989; Zbl 0693.35138)] is not correct.
