The author provides criteria for the solvability of the Diophantine equation \(x^ 2-my^ 2=c\) which is related to the class number of the real quadratic field \(\mathbb Q(\sqrt m)\). This builds upon the work of Ankeny, Chowla, Hasse, S. D. Lang, Takeuchi, Yokoi, and more recently several works of this reviewer.
