This paper develops a nonequilibrium theory of a slurry. In addition to the three thermodynamic variables used in the equilibrium theory of a binary system (pressure, temperature and composition), this theory introduces a fourth variable which measures the departure from melting/freezing equilibrium. The theory is simplified to yield a Boussinesq-like set of governing equations; their practical use is illustrated with a stability problem which was previously studied in the equilibrium case.
