The author constructs a new 1-parameter family of properly embedded doubly-periodic surfaces, which after dividing out the translational symmetry have genus 2. The examples known before had genus 0 (Scherk) and 1 (Karcher). He also gives a uniqueness theorem characterizing Scherk's surface among the genus 0 case.
