This paper answers a question of Ralph McKenzie on the Loewy-rank of finitely generated congruence modular varieties, by using the theory of the modular commutator. As a main tool, a group-theoretic lemma of L. G. Kovács and M. F. Newman is generalized, which is of independent interest. This lemma gives information on subdirectly irreducible algebras in finitely generated modular varieties.
