The author proposes solving a nonlinear diffusion problem by freezing the diffusion coefficient in the matrix approximating the diffusion term. The method appears to be closely related to the more general method proposed by \textit{J. Douglas} jun. [The mathematics of finite elements and applications III. Proc. Conf., Brunal Univ., Uxbridge/U.K. 1978, 289-304 (1979; Zbl 0435.65095)] referred to in this paper.
