The author shows that the compactness of Hankel operators acting on Bergman spaces of square-integrable functions, holomorphic on bounded, multiply connected domains, can be equivalently characterized in terms of the reproducing kernels of the space. Doing that he answers a question in [\textit{S. Axler}, Duke Math. J. 53, 315-332 (1986; Zbl 0633.47014)]. The author also extends a result obtained in the case of the unit disk in [\textit{K. Stroethoff}, Ill. J. Math. 34, No. 1, 159-174 (1990; Zbl 0687.47019)].
