A quadratic optimal control problem for a nonlinear hyperbolic equation was recently considered by \textit{V. Komornik} and \textit{D. Tiba} [Acta Math. Hung. 49, 261-266 (1987; Zbl 0621.49014)]. Under some conditions on the type of nonlinearity they derived a necessary optimality condition in the form of an optimality system. Here, the same result is derived under substantially weakened assumptions.
