The well known Hoffman-Wielandt inequality, bounding the distance between the spectra of two normal matrices, is extended to the case of commuting tuples. The proof uses besides the Birkhoff-König theorem on doubly stochastic matrices also the imbedding of tuples of matrices in Clifford operators. We remark that a different proof has been given by the reviewer [ibid. 182, 235-237 (1993)].
