The motivation of this paper is the computation of the invariant density function of the Frobenius-Perron operator derived from a transformation \(S: [0,1] \to [0,1]\). This is achieved by a projection method using piecewise polynomials. The theoretical part is a general convergence theory for finite dimensional projection approximations (in particular concerned with stability, consistency and convergence). The paper also contains substantial numerical tests.
