Geometric quotients of link groups (Q1208576)

A geometric method is given for finding quotients of a link group. A projection of the link is chosen and a spanning surface of the link is constructed. The latter decomposes as disks connected by maximal bands, the bands are contracted forming a quotient all of whose relations are of Artin-type, and which may be an Artin group. Various examples are included of these contractions and Artin quotients. The author has added a ``note into the proof'' that his method requires some modification both in Section 2 and in Section 5.
