The reductions of the finite layer method once studied in detail by the authors for the elastodynamics of transverse isotropic bodies [\textit{Z. Yang} and \textit{W. Loo}, Appl. Math. Mech., Engl. Ed. 13, No. 10, 917-927 (1992; Zbl 0766.73056)] are given to several special cases. Two- dimensional problems, axisymmetric problems and static problems are discussed, and this finite layer method is also generalized to the problem in which materials possess viscous properties. The finite layer method can be used to analyse semi-infinite layered soils and to deal with the problem of the interaction between soils and structures.
