In the first part of this paper, the author reviews Newman-Penrose [\textit{E. T. Newman} and \textit{R. Penrose}, J. Math. Phys. 3, 556-578 (1962; Zbl 0108.409)] and Geroch-Held-Penrose [\textit{R. Geroch, A. Held} and \textit{R. Penrose}, ibid. 14, 874-881 (1973)] formalisms for better understanding their role in general relativity. This is followed by a detailed discussion on the technique for completely solving the GHP commutator equations.
